Marginalization of Women and Women’s rights in Poland:
The first major piece of legislation that Solidarity pushed through the Parliament after the fall of communism was a law that has made abortion illegal.
See a trailer for a new documentary film about this taboo subject here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVp4R3G9MWE
Directed by Claudia Snochowska-Gonzalez & Anna Zdrojewska, UNDERGROUND WOMEN’S STATE presents the experiences of eight women who had an illegal, underground abortion in Poland. In 1993, abortion on socio-economic grounds was banned by the democratic Polish government, creating some of the most restrictive legislation in Europe. Yet up to 200,000 women annually still have abortions in Poland. The film examines why there is no organised campaign for legislative change, revealing the powerlessness of grassroots campaigns against the combined forces of Church and State.
